Established in spring 2010, the Falmouth Habitat Project is a partnership between a local college, Falmouth Marine School, and Falmouth’s port authority, Falmouth Harbour Commissioners (FHC). The project aims to provide FHC with an overview of environmental habitats in and around the Fal estuary by encouraging Marine Science students to undertake research projects in and around the Falmouth Harbour Area. Knowledge gained through these annual research projects enables FHC to make sustainable decisions for the port, whilst the students gain valuable work-related learning and industry experience
through sponsored projects.

The Falmouth Habitat Project developed as a result of three Falmouth Marine School students taking the initiative to meet with FHC staff to gather Fal and Helford Special Area of Conservation information for an assignment. Since then, the enterprise has continued to mature, led by enthusiastic academics and involving capable students. The project shows great potential to benefit all involved and deliver valuable information for Fal users. At FHC, we believe that knowledge is important in our aim to operate sustainably, as is encouraging young people to take an interest in their local environment. We are therefore committed to offering our support to student research within Falmouth Harbour, and are certain that throughout 2010 we will see an increase in quality research for the estuary.
